Art and story combine powerfully in this lyrical tale of a young man caught in the maelstrom of the civil rights movement and the entrenched homophobia of small-town America. Toland Polk, the son of an uneducated white carpenter, has grown up in the Southern town of Clayfield. It is the 1960s, a time of passionate beliefs and violent emotions, and Clayfield’s citizens are divided in the fight over segregation. As Toland fights on the side of the civil rights activists, he slowly begins to realize that he also has a more personal battle – to accept that he is gay.

With a subtle yet intricate plot, and distinctively evocative illustrations, Stuck Rubber Baby is an unflinchingly honest look at one man’s world of fears, dreams, and prejudice.

Howard Cruse is the creator of Barefootz and Wendel and the founding editor of Gay Comix. Stuck Rubber Baby won an Eisner Award and a Harvey Award for Best Graphic Album. ‘One of the most talented artists ever to work in the form… In reconstructing a memory of a time when one struggle lit up the path for anoher, and an oppressed people gave instruction, through example, in the ways of resistance to the entire watching world, Howard Cruse offers us something deeply important and fortifying, something we need.’ – from the original introduction by Tony Kushner

‘This meticulously detailed novel vivdly brings to life dozens of characters struggling against the upheavals of the day.’ – Vibe

‘Bravura storytelling… made specific, pungent, and singular by its setting in the Movement-era South.’ – Artformum International

Stuck Rubber Baby is Americana on a par with William Faulkner and Horton Foote, and it packs the kind of epic sweep and historical resonance that Forrest Gump can only wish it possessed’- Fort Worth Star-Telegram
